The Role of the Mediator

The Role of the Mediator is to:

  1. To oversee the mediation process, to make sure that it is fair and equitable for all parties involved.
  2.  To help clarify and interpret the issues and interests of the parties. While the mediator will not dictate a solution, he or she may ask questions and make comments that allow the parties to further identify their true needs and issues, as well as to better understand the needs and issues of the other party.
  3. To help facilitate the communications necessary for a successful agreement, by adding a new perspective to the situation, or by ensuring that the meeting is conducted in a professional manner.
  4.  To assist the parties, where appropriate, of the alternatives they may face if they cannot reach a successful settlement.
